In 1965, Sanders moved to Mississauga, Ontario, to oversee his Canadian franchise and continued to collect franchise fees and broadcast fees in Canada and the United States, but retained control of all activities outside Canada. He retained the support of executives and franchisees who respected his culinary expertise, but feared the force and diversity of his curse, described by one New Yorker as "the force of diversity," as the restaurant company varied in what executives called his chicken. The food served by KFC restaurants became so expensive that some believed they would cut costs and allow quality to deteriorate. Fries have become a staple of the fast food industry in North Carolina, but also in the United States.
In 1939, food critic Duncan Hines visited Sanders' restaurant and included it in Adventures in Good Eating for its food. Sanders decided to start a franchise of his own and traveled the United States looking for restaurants that would match his vision. One change the company made was the addition of gravy, which Sanders boasted: "It will make you throw away the chicken and just eat the gravy." They simplified it to reduce time and cost. In July 1940, Sanders came up with the idea of roasting the chicken in a deep-fat fryer that cooked it faster than a pan - and his local popularity grew.
After the Phillip family moved downtown, the city became one of the first in North Carolina to introduce the Main Street Program, which pumped millions of dollars into revitalizing the small, aging downtown. The city's first public-private partnership with the City of Morriston was established and began a long-standing support system for the urban regeneration project.
Owners Jamie McGimsey and Courtney Morse kept the original name of Homer's Soda Shop, but brought a little whimsy to the place when they attended a national cocktail party for the first year of 2018. This included a parade through downtown Morriston at 5 p.m., an open house at 4 p.m., and the restaurant's opening at 6 p.m.
